🏙️ Pathankot

Pathankot's name derives from the Pathania clan — Rajput chieftains who ruled the area during the medieval Nurpur Kingdom (11th–16th centuries CE). In ancient times the region was known as Audumbara, mentioned in the Mahabharata and referenced by Sanskrit scholar Panini as a warrior community settlement.

During the Mughal era under Shah Jahan, the seat of power nearby was named Nurpur. The Sikh Empire later annexed Pathankot during Maharaja Ranjit Singh's reign. The legendary Moran Sarkar — whom Ranjit Singh married — lived in a fortress here from 1811 until her passing.

In 1853, Pathankot merged with Gurdaspur district under British colonial rule. In 2011, it was carved out as a separate district. The city gained international attention in January 2016 following an attack on the Pathankot Air Force Station.

Pathankot's economy is driven by agriculture, trade, and transportation. The city is a key litchi-growing region in Punjab, with a celebrated seasonal harvest each late spring. Other major crops include wheat and maize.

Its position at the crossroads of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and J&K makes it a vital transit and trading hub. Military establishments, local markets, small-scale industries, and a growing tourism economy all contribute significantly to the city's livelihood.
